Agriculture
Capitalize on the Growing Global Demand for Agriculture and Cropland!
There are many avenues of agribusiness at Flat Creek Holdings including timber, cheese, mushrooms, the berry orchard, dairy, and irrigated pastures and fields. We are seeing the same trends in growing interest in plantations that is written about in January 2011 Forbes article on ranches out west. The demand for agricultural land is at a recent high, up as much as 10% from last year according to a November 15, 2010 Bloomberg article. There are 211± acres of fertile irrigated pastures and fields at Flat Creek Holdings! The new owner can continue to operate each of them if they choose or they could lease them out, both of which can be income producing. One facet of Flat Creek Holdings is the agriculture business that is now producing organic produce and award-winning cheeses. The cheeses and mushrooms are being distributed by Royal Food Service and Sysco Systems at numerous restaurants and retail locations such as Chateau Elan, The Governor's Mansion, Restaurant Eugene, Soho, Whole Foods Atlanta Locations, Star Provisions, Jekyll Island Club, Savannah Bee Co., Wolf Mountain Vineyard, and dozens of others. The berries are also being distributed. The biggest benefit of this side of the business is the cross promotion it lends to the hospitality side.
Flat Creek Holdings began as a hunting and fishing lodge in the late 1990s near Swainsboro, Georgia. Environmental stewardship and sustainability is a large part of the mission of Flat Creek Holdings, so the owners set out to revitalize and enhance the farmland. Thankfully, this process complements the property and the farm now supplies much of the produce and eggs for the Lodge’s dining room, and provides income!
In 2007,
the dairy became operational, complete with a herd of grass-fed jersey cows
and a master cheese maker with over 30 years of experience, producing a variety
of artisanal cheese, including several award winners.
The cheese production
also complements the property; guests love it, it produces income, and is
a great write-off. The Aztec Cheddar, a traditional milled curd cheddar with
marbling of cocoa and guajillo peppers, won the Flavor of Georgia Award in
2009. Three other cheeses brought awards home to Georgia from the American
Cheese Society competition in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Mushrooms
The farm recently expanded into the profitable and high-demand niche of Oyster Mushroom cultivation. They are not only a culinary delight, but are also an extension to Flat Creek Holdings' environmental stewardship.
They are grown in a state-of-the-art facility in a pasteurized medium of recycled material and found in a variety of retailers and restaurants in Atlanta, Savannah, Macon, and Augusta. Currently, over 100
pounds of mushrooms are picked per day! One of the largest mushroom
distributors has asked if Flat Creek Holdings can supply 1,000 pounds per week,
just to them!
Berry Orchard
The 10 +/- acre berry orchard is enclosed by a high fence, has a drip irrigation system, and features a variety of berries including blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry. Made from the berries and other fruits from the farm, Flat Creek Holdings produces jams, jellies, and relishes. Plenty of freezer storage right on the property allows sales throughout the year, without relying on the market at the time of harvest.
Greenhouse
The herbs and vegetables grown in some of the several greenhouses on location are used by the chef and enjoyed by guests in the Flat Creek Holdings Restaurant.
Timber
There is an extensive and extremely well-managed timber program at Flat Creek Holdings, with 640 +/- acres in merchantable timber. Click here to see a timber-type map.
Fish Hatchery
The fish hatchery has six fish tanks with various fish, including catfish,
striper, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bream, etc. The fish are tank-raised
in a nursery eco-system. The bass, bream, and catfish supply to the dining
room and no hormones are used in the raising of fish, making them as organic
as possible.
